Cyber risk and information security quickly emerged as a critical research focus for both JPMorgan Chase and Syracuse University, and one which requires the investment of significant resources and attention of many other organizations across many different industries. The ever-continuing and ubiquitous blending of the physical world with cyber-based environment requires a deeper understanding and a multidisciplinary approach to understand and address. The financial and societal risks associated with the world's deepening dependence on information technology places a significant requirement on organizations of all kinds to safeguard personal and financial information entrusted in them. This business challenge is exacerbated within a complex, global organization like JPMorgan Chase. As its business infrastructure has become increasingly complex, the supporting technology has evolved in parallel and information security risk has increased as well. The challenges of providing adequate 'cyber security' are relevant for all industry, government, health care and non profit sectors, requiring the best collective thinking of practitioners to solve.

To address these challenges, JPMorgan Chase and Syracuse University co-hosted a conference on Cyber Risk and Information Security on June 16, 2009, where experts from industry, government and academia discussed trends and research opportunities from their different perspectives. Participants examined what is needed for information and mission assurance in highly dynamic global operating environments. The conference was designed to produce insights by contrasting and comparing each sector's views on operational challenges, opportunities, and research in information and mission assurance.
